Temptation, she’s a b*tch.

Is temptation knocking on your door with vegan snacks in her hand?

That’s just CLASSIC temptation.

We all know that fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains are vegan. This accidentally vegan foods list is more about the junk food temptation.

Junk food cravings don’t discriminate against whether you’re vegan, plant-based or eating animal-based foods.

When it’s treat day, it’s treat day.

Going plant-based or vegan, sometimes you still might be tempted to reach for any of these surprisingly vegan foods.

Yes okay okay, most are not exactly healthy or plant-based, but they are vegan, so we’ll let this one slide. Just like we let treat day slide.

There are a lot of products out there that were not made vegan for the sake of being vegan, but they just came out that way from the recipe. We call these ‘accidentally vegan,’ lol.

Most meat eaters will associate vegans as just eating kale and twigs, I’m here to dispel the myth. Vegans like to occasionally eat naughty food as much as the next person. We fall off of the healthy food wagon too.

PLANT-BASED FOOD MADE SIMPLE

Eating plant-based doesn’t have to be complicated. This Complete Plant-Based Diet Foods List makes grocery shopping quick, easy and delicious.

Oreos – Vegan Snacks

This accidentally vegan ‘sandwich cookie’ (I love that Oreos call it that) consists of two wafers with a sweet creme filling is the best selling cookie brand in the United States.

It’s a sweet crunchy biscuit way of treating yo’self.

Fun fact for you, did you know that some people think they are black and some think they are brown. The cookie monster makers at the Oreo factory themselves won’t give a straight answer as they like to keep up the color mystery!

In the US these are just called Oreos, but in the UK they call them Oreo biscuits. MANY varieties and limited editions have been produced but the sandwich white filling trumps them all!

Doritos – Vegan Snacks

Ahhh Doritos, the staple essential to any good house party.

Doritos just make everything better, don’t they.

They are one of the BEST accidentally vegan snacks out there.

Doritos themselves are not marketing their packets with the word ‘vegan’ but the good news is, that a few of them are in fact vegan friendly whoooo.

  • There are TWO flavors of Doritos that are currently vegan:
  • Toasted Corn Tortilla Chip
  • Spicy Sweet Chilli Flavoured Tortilla Chips
  • Blaze

Blaze chips are packing some serious heat in their packets. The spice comes from jalapeño peppers, prepare your taste buds for a spicy hit! Yum.

Ritz Crackers – Vegan Snacks

These are oven baked chips with a crispy, thin shape and irresistible crunch! They are so buttery, yet they ARE vegan. Yes, that’s right, they are on of the surprising vegan foods.

In short, Ritz Crackers are lit AF.

They come in four different flavors:

  • Ritz Original Crackers
  • Ritz Roasted Vegetable Crackers
  • Ritz Whole Wheat Crackers
  • Ritz Bacon Crackers

I’ve looked at the ingredients and these rich, flakey, crackers of happiness are ALL vegan. Yesssss!

Unfrosted Pop Tarts – Vegan Breakfast

It’s what’s on the inside that counts.

That’s what some say about people, but it can used when talking about Unfrosted Pop Tarts too.

In regular pop tarts you might find milk powder, gelatine or whey.

BUT worry not because Unfrosted Pop Tarts can save the vegan day.

They make for a delicious addition to your accidentally vegan snacks.

PLUS you have options.

You can get them in Unfrosted Strawberry, Unfrosted Blueberry or Unfrosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon.

These pop tarts of deliciousness can be put in the toaster just as regular pop tarts.

Unfrosted Mini Wheats – Vegan Breakfast

Kellogg’s does it again with these 100% whole grain high in fibre cereal you can eat for your vegan breakfast. They come toasted for the extra crunch.

Unfortunately the Frosted kind are made with gelatine, but you should be safe with the Unfrosted kind. These are indeed accidentally vegan.

The Unfrosted are also sugar free!

Sugar free hard to find with cereals these days!

Lindt Excellence Cocoa Bars – Vegan Chocolate

Lindt have confirmed that all of their dark solid chocolates are vegan-friendly.

  • 70%
  • 85%
  • 90%
  • 99%

Dark chocolate is winning!

Dark chocolate is now regarded as a health food, eaten in small amounts.

I admit I’m a chocoholic, before going plant-based four years ago I LOVED milk chocolate. I gave it up rapidly when I switched to vegan but now I LOVE dark chocolate. It’s definitely a grower on the tastebuds. It makes for an amazing accidentally vegan snack.

I do keep a bar of the 70% in pantry at all times, often munched on after dinner. My husband is a big fan of the 85% one too.

According to healthline, dark chocolate is very nutritious for you. It’s a powerful source of antioxidants, improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure, reduces the risk of heart disease and is great for your skin!

I guess I have it ingrained in me that chocolate is bad for you, but dark chocolate is GREAT for you.

BRB, I’m going to the shop to stock up on dark chocolate.

Nut Butters – Vegan Snacks

Not just the biscuits Nut Butters, although they are vegan, I’m here to talk about butters made from nuts.

When switching to a plant-based diet, nut butters are LIFE SAVERS.

Almond butter sales are booming and for good reason. It is the accidentally vegan food bomb!

The stuff is like a nut version of crack, not that I’ve ever tried crack.

This another favorite of mine as it’s healthy and falls under the plant-based group of foods.

Healthline reports that almonds are packed full of good healthy fats which are essential for your body and even aid weight-loss.

It’s rich in Vitamin E, magnesium and helps lower your cholesterol.

To keep them as healthy as possible I always go for the ones with the fewest amount of ingredients. You really don’t need any flavorings or E numbers in nut butters, they are amazing enough!

Almond is my nut butter of preference. I also love a good peanut butter. But you can now also get cashew, hazelnut or macadamia.

It’s even pretty easy to make your own, if that’s your jam, or your nut butter even.

I like to have them in smoothies, overnight oats and on the side of pancakes or crudités. Yum yum.

Pringles – Vegan Snacks

Stackable chips that still crop up here, there and everywhere. These are some yummy accidentally vegan snacks.

Once you pop, you just can’t stop. Literally.

Flavored Pringles which are vegan.

  • Original
  • Wavy Classic Salted
  • Lightly Salted Original
  • Kickin’ Chicken Taco
  • Bacon
  • Smoke

Caramel, Sriracha Asian Chili Sauce, Wasabi & Soy Sauce, Salsa de Chile Habanero, Cheddar & Sour Cream and Salt & Vinegar are all not vegan. So steer clear of these if you’re vegan. At least you get all of the other flavors though.

Bread – Vegan Breakfast

Ahhh my arch nemesis. Bread.

If you’ve been vegan or plant-based for a while then chances are that you would have read most food labels under sun of what you like to eat.

You will have also realized that many foods, including several types of bread, have pesky milk powders in them.

Those pesky milk powders.

Several times I’ve checked the labels of my old favorites, and there it is, the words ‘milk powder’ staring back at me. I also borderline THROW the item back on the shelf with an internal eye roll.

The good news is that if you get the right kind, I’ve realized bread is GOOD for you.

Think sourdough, rye or pumpernickel. These are yummy accidentally vegan foods.

These are not like the other processed crap you can buy which are packed full of refined sugars.

These yummy healthy breads are a type of whole food and are healthy.

I often buy them sliced and put them in the freezer and have as toast, with my nut butter of course!

Sriracha Sauce – Vegan Sauces

This very trendy wendy sauce is making a big name for itself on the food scene.

Its spice in a bottle. Thick like a paste, similar to Tommy K. The Thia or Vietnamese hot sauce has a base of sun ripened chilis.

In Thailand it’s often used as a dipping sauce. In Vietnam they love it on fried noodles or as a topping for spring rolls.

If you love spice then this stuff is the s*it.

Fajita Kits – Vegan Lunch Or Vegan Dinner

Holy guacamole, maybe it’s Mexican night.

I know the above picture isn’t technically a photo of the kits, or even fajitas but the pup was too cute for me to have any control over what I clicked on, sorry.

Anyways.

Who doesn’t love Mexican food? I’m yet to meet anyone who dislikes it.

These surprising vegan foods from Old El Paso are globally renowned. These sizzling Mexican taste sensations are vegan! The packets usually include the seasoning, salsa, tortillas or taco shells. So you just need to add your plant-based protein source and vegetables to the mix.

So instead of mixing with chicken or beef, just grab some refried beans, pinto beans or black beans.

Here are the Ol Del Paso ones you can try which are vegan:

  • Soft Tortilla Taco Bowls Dinner Kit
  • Hard & Soft Taco Dinner Kit
  • Hard & Soft Twin Pack Dinner Kit
  • Soft Taco Dinner Kit
  • Fajita Dinner Kit
  • Hard Taco Dinner Kit
  • Stand N’ Stuff Dinner Kit
  • Enchilada Dinner Kit

These are so popular many brands have released their own versions.

As far as I know (so always read the label), own-branded from grocery stores are vegan too.

Skittles – Vegan Snacks

You can taste the f*cking rainbow. Skittles – the rainbow accidentally vegan candy is void of any animal products.

Yes sure they might be sugary, but that’s what makes this tangy snack soooo good.

They formally have gelatine in them but thankfully this was removed in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

There are however some other concerns that align with vegan values. Skittles contain palm oil, an industry responsible for mass deforestation and affecting the orangutans significantly. Skittles also contain artificial coloring, which is tested on animals. Mars as a company has been garnering negative attention from PETA for animal testing and it’s unclear whether this testing is still happening.

Palm oil is in A LOT of products for example chips and toothpaste. It’s cheap to make and essential to a lot of foods and goods. BUT you can make it sustainably, those that aren’t growing it in a sustainable way, there’s no excuse really, other than they are worried about impacting their profits or slight price increases.

Bacon Flavored Bits – Vegan Lunch Or Vegan Dinner

Perhaps the most legit surprisingly vegan food that shouldn’t be vegan.

Primarily these are made up of protein, soy and flavoring. The taste is very bacon-y.

Obviously, with this one always check as maybe there are few out there that are actually made from bacon, but most are ok.

This cruelty-free bacon crunch bits can be great as a salad, pasta, soup or baked potato topping.

Gravy – Vegan Sauces

Across the pond in the UK they have Bisto. Their commercials always say “Ahhhh Bisto.” If you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend it. It’s the sh*t and you might actually saying ‘Ahhh Bisto’ after the first taste.

Here in the U.S. we have Campbell’s Mushroom Gravy, we don’t have a memorable commercial like that. But we do match them in terms of both brands are happily vegan.

Vegan gravy makes a great compliment to a nut roast or even roasted vegetables. They are made of soy but they do taste great!

Almond Magnum – Vegan Dessert

I couldn’t write this list without thinking about DESSERT.

This is not quite a dessert you might get in a restaurant, but to me it’s better as you can just grab it on a hot day.

OMG. Have you ever even TASTED an Almond Magnum?

It’s a rich velvety vegan creamy Madagascan ice-cream, that has been dipped in dark chocolate and crunchy almond pieces.

It’s an accidentally vegan indulgence of an ice-cream but without the dairy. It’s made from a blend of coconut oil and pea protein.

If you haven’t tried one already, be ready to be FLOORED by this one.

If you’re an ice-cream nut, then maybe this is the nut ice-cream for you.

The Bottom Line

This is a list of the ‘un-expectedly surprise vegan foods.’

I hope these have all been ‘good’ surprises.

No one likes bad surprises.

When going plant-based or vegan, you still have access to some great cruelty-free options. Many of the above are classic foods that non-vegans eat, which have been made in an ethical way.

Before going vegan, you were eating vegan foods without knowing it.

It’s pretty amazing what you can make from just plants ingredients.

Vegan foods aren’t all nuts and seeds, there is also an array of junk (or healthy) food to choose from!

Different countries can have different ingredients to its advisable to always check the label prior to purchasing. Companies frequently change their ingredients too, so even if at the time of writing vegan ingredients were not included. They might be in the future.

Happy junk food shopping!
